About Me


I am a rising senior at Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio. I will graduate in the Spring of 2013 with a BS in Mathematics (with a focus in Statistics) as well as a minor in Computational Science. I hope to eventually to to Graduate School for either Statistics or Meteorology.


Research Goals


-Become fluent in MatLab programming.

-Learn Linear Regression.

-Be able to implement these: Take theory and apply it to practice.

-Program MatLab to run linear regression and determine whether or not the coefficient values are significant.

-Test this code with a simulation: use simulated data to make sure the code is working as I expect it to.

-Integrate my work with Abby's work: use the images Abby generates and in each voxel do regression.

-Learn how to make useful displays to communicate what is being done.

-Be able to save data in a file and load it back in, and be able to load in the data that Abby has saved.

-Find the mead and standard deviation in every voxel. Turn this into an image for display.

-Learn how to use the Likelihood Ratio Test to derive the t-statistic.

-Once a number for the degree of activation in each voxel is obtained, color code this with a color map for different degrees of activation.

END GOAL: Get actual data and run the above analyses on it.

Week One: 5/28-6/1


May 28th

-Memorial Day!

-Traveled to Marquette University


May 29th

-Orientation Day!

-Filled out necessary paperwork, including work forms and pre-survey

-Met fellow REU students and mentors.

-Received tours of both the campus and the surrounding area


May 30th

-Learned how to use Marquette's library resources

-Met with advisory, Dr. Rowe, to learn the overview and general outcomes of the research project.

-Began reading and taking notes on Linear Models in Statistics by Alvin C. Rencher


May 31st

-Attended talk by Dr. Factor, "Good Research Practices"

-Began working with Matlab and learning how to use it


June 1st

-Traveled home to attend sister's graduation.

Week Two: 6/4-6/8


June 4th

-Learned about the underlying math principles behind Linear Regression


June 5th

June 6th

-Worked in MatLab to figure out how to use time series data as well as run various statistical procedures.

-Set up meeting with Dr. Rowe.

June 7th

-Working lunch with other REU students.

-Met with Dr. Rowe to discuss current progress, as well as future goals. Worked out problems that had arisen and obtained books to use at reference for MatLab.

-Located various articles to supplement the books I have been reading for research.

-Began to get a better idea of the workings of the actual MRI equipment


June 19th

-Read article "A complex way to compute fMRI activation" by Daniel Rowe and Brent Logan

-Outlined programs in MATLAB


June 20th

-Attended LaTeX introduction by Dr. Corliss

-Attempted to download LaTeX to my computer and begin learning how to use it


June 21st

-Working Lunch with other REU students

-Created basic color map using MATLAB


June 22nd

-Worked on power point for mini-presentation

Week Six: 7/2-7/6


July 2nd

-Outlined more coding in MATLAB, determining what I need to make the computer do in order to run the linear regression test


July 3rd

-Attended talk by Dr. Brylow, "What Makes A Good Poster"

-Looked around the 3rd floor of Cudahy and critiqued the research posters, determined a favorite and a least favorite, and used it to figure out what I wanted to do with my poster

-Continued coding in MATLAB
