Project Summary

The proposed research aims to address the opioid epidemic in the United States by developing predictive algorithms that can assess a patient's risk of developing Opioid Use Disorder, experiencing opioid overdose, or being readmitted to the hospital for opioid-related issues. This will be built through a web application called the SURE app which uses peer mentoring to connect mentors with mentees in its database. The study will also utilize de-identified hospital records from Froedtert Hospital and extract health-related, demographic, psychosocial, and outcome-level data on patients. ChatbotGpt will be used as an AI tool prediction for this project. The objectives of the research are as follows:

The first aim focuses on determining the specific variables, including health-related data and social determinants, that can be used to assess the risk of OUD development, opioid overdose, and readmission for opioid-related issues. This will involve identifying key data that can predict risk factors for these indicators and understanding the distribution of patients with OUD, overdose, and readmission based on different variables such as urban and rural settings.

The second aim is to determine the machine learning models that can effectively predict the risk of developing OUD, opioid overdose, and readmission at different time intervals for opioid-related issues.

The third aim is determining how providers can utilize the risk data obtained from the predictive models to provide overdose prevention intervention in the emergency department setting.

Goals

1. Since this is my first research project, I want to get a general understanding of research including experience with:

• How a research project is started and takes shape
• How to draw upon other research to build your own
• How to write, discuss, and present research
• How to effectively work as a team on a project

2. I would like to develop more skills in coding, as I have never done any coding related to web development before.

3. I want to understand how a web application is created and functions.

• This also includes how C# is used within web development

4. I would meet and connect with members of Marquette computer science department to become more involved.
